SETTING THE BEAD LEVEL: The indication given on the monitor when a bead occurs is, for example, S .75 391 meaning that a S mall bead occurred measuring .75 volts at 391 feet into the spool. In this case, the operator, when first gaining experience with the system, has decided, based on his touch, that a voltage of .75 from the detector head represents a bead of interest and is small rather than large. He may have set in to the set-up menu that any output greater than .5 volts is a bead. This experience came from feeling beads with his fingers, as before, and typing in the threshold number that indicates at what voltage level he wishes to start counting beads and at what voltage he considers the bead to be large rather than small. As he gains more experience and consults with others, this number can be adjusted. This can be done while the system is running. In our experience, this learning process is fairly brief and is usually not repeated each time a different product is run. To save the set-up resulting from this process, a RECIPE FILE is used to store the parameters together with an identifying file number. This allows that file to be automatically called up and used when that product is run later. ALARMS: The number of beads occurring in a certain length (10 beads in 100 feet, for instance) may be used as a tolerance figure and set in to the menu. When this number is reached within a 100 foot length, alarms are generated to alert the operator to take action. This alarm function allows two different tolerances, one for small beads and a different number for large beads. Typical numbers/100 feet might be 10 small and 2 large. This information is also stored in the RECIPE FILE together with the bead and HVC test parameters as described above and can be called up for use at a later date when that same product is manufactured.
